If I say that I'm sad...don't downplay my sorrow by pointing out someone whom you may feel has more reason to be sad.

If I say that I'm hurt...don't downplay my pain by pointing out someone whom you may feel has more reason to be sad.

When I'm angry...don't downplay my fury by pointing out someone whom you may feel has more reason to be angry.

Who am I to you?

When I entrust to you the darker corners of my existence; do not belittle me with vein and shallow repetition.

Yes, there is always someone who has it worst...but there is also always someone who has it better.

For which is my heart more deserving?

Listen to me

As the voices raise up around us
Cries for help
Cries for hope
We cry in tears that cannot be heard
Tears that will not be heard
Our tears are not without
As we are not without
They must be heard within
For who hears my cry
If not I
Who sees my tears if not me
Reflect
Reflect on the voices around us
Let them hear the cries within us
And let the cries within us
See the tears around us

Depression is Real

Robin Williams: July 21, 1951 - August 11, 2014

Today I found that the tragic suicidal death of Robin Williams has become a platform for many people to open up and admit that they suffer depression and have (or have had) thoughts of suicide.

This is important.

I've been through depression (I use the word "been" very loosely).  There are a lot of emotions that flow through a person at that time and it can be very difficult - and evidently even impossible - to process all of the emotion at once.  I think ultimately, the more questions we are unable to answer, the deeper we sink into depression.  I also think that part of the reason why human beings are so collectively compassionate toward losing someone to suicide and depression is because sorrow is something that we all understand.  But we live in a world where so much emphasis is placed on positive energies such as, happiness, success, belonging, possession, and qualities such as smiles, courtesy and helpfulness; that when we are faced with an absence of such things, we hardly know what to do with ourselves.
Why do we pretend that emotions that occur at the other end of the spectrum do not or should not exist?
Why is it so difficult for us to relate to persons who are going through depression?
Why is it that when we are unable to harness positive energy, we say that we are weak?

Letting go of hurt is not easy. Hearts break in silence and heals only with time.  Unfortunately, sometimes we hold on for so long that the silence kills us. We sometimes fear that because the things inside of us are not common, they are ugly and have no place in the world. And when we lose, we fear that we have nothing left to lose.  But at the end of the day, it is not the receiving of love that strengthens us but rather the understanding that we are indeed capable of loving something more than we love ourselves.

LIVING IN THE BALANCE

Outwardly, we not only strive for, but we crave comfort, validation, knowledge and power.  But in the manner of what true virtue is;
If we are to find comfort, we must learn discontent.
If we are to find validation, we must learn our faults.
If we are to find knowledge, we must learn to recognize the boundaries of ignorance.
If we are to gain power, we must learn the servitude of submission.

LIVE CONSCIOUSLY

Though you and I both may see at the same time, the same strip of cloth, in the same light, in the same context...if I see with my eyes and you see with your eyes; then the one strip of cloth is seen twice in two different ways.

There is a nagging diablo who sits in wait at the gates of our mouths to cause the intention of our thought to be misconstrued.  But when there is no thought at all, he humors himself with light words that are forever stained upon our lips.

In other words...Think before you speak; don't allow your words to make a fool of you.

Personal Accountability

There is no harm in identifying the origin of a problem, dilemma, quandary, predicament, etc.  But we should be careful to not focus so much attention on the origin of things that we forget the fact of things--or in other words, we forget the current situation.  We cannot change the things that were done in the past, we can only learn from them or suffer of them.

The longer it takes for us to determine a solution to an unwelcomed situation, the more intricate it becomes.  Of course, solutions are not very easily spoken into existence.   As it was it high school, name calling and finger pointing are both childish and pointless.

The best to be done is to assume a position of personal accountability.  Stand against the things we are not convicted to stand for.  An individual is not always the entire effect of a solutions, but the solution must undoubtedly begin with the individual.
